Friends of Frankie is a charity established after the tragic passing of Frankie Grogan, a little boy aged 3 who died suddenly as a result of sudden unexpected death in childhood (SUDC) in 2019. Frankie was a happy, healthy 3-year-old boy full of fun, love and questions! He was put to bed as normal but was to be found unresponsive in his bed the following morning.
No family should have to suffer the devastating effects of losing child so unexpectedly or at such a young age. Friends of Frankie was started by Frankie’s parents with the aim of raising awareness about sudden unexpected death in childhood (SUDC), raising funds to support research into SUDC and to assist organisations who provide support for bereaved families as a result of SUDC.
Friends of Frankie has been chosen as the 2021 IPC Annual Conference nominated charity through the friendship of Vicky Jarrett, The IPC’s Compliance Manager, with the Grogan family and also because Vicky’s children were friends with Frankie.
Sudden unexpected death in childhood (SUDC) is a term that was first used in 2005 to describe an unexpected death of a child over the age of 12 months, but too old to be considered as being the result of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) – also commonly known as cot death.
Little is known about the cause of SUDC and why a seemingly healthy child between the ages of 1 to 18 can go to sleep and never wake up. Friends of Frankie seeks to change this by supporting research and raising awareness to help spare all families from the devastating effects of SUDC.
